What Radical Mesothelioma Treatments Are Available?

Article by Jon Butt

Current radical mesothelioma treatments include chemotherapy treatments, radiation treatments, surgical treatments and experimental therapies and drugs. Research news reports the limited success of present treatments for Mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma research news indicates that traditional treatments viz. single or multi-drug chemotherapy has a response rate of about 20%. Radiation treatments, usually used in conjunction with surgery or chemotherapy treatments can relieve pain and shrink tumors, making breathing easier. However, radiation treatments can also cause severe side effects.

Efforts To Combat Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma can take between ten and sixty years to develop after inhalation of respirable asbestos fibers, but Mesothelioma progresses fast. Radical surgeries as mesothelioma treatments have had limited success. Surgical treatments attempted include extra-pleural pneumonectomy (EPP) and pleurectomy.

Treatment news indicates that in EPP over 15% patients die soon after surgery. EPP involves removal of pleura, diaphragm, pericardium, part of the phrenic nerve and the entire tumor-affected lung and has to be supported by chemotherapy or radiation.

The pleurectomy treatments involve removal of the pleura without removing the whole lung. These treatments are best in patients with good lung expansion who tend to accumulate fluid. In combination with radiation pleurectomy is reported in treatment news to have given 22-month survival in 50% and 24-month survival in 41% cases in a 27-patient group with mesothelioma of the epithelial subtype.

Surgical treatments of mesothelioma have not been shown to offer significant advantages over the limited non-surgical treatments. Experimental drugs under evaluation include treatments by Onconase, Lovastatin and an Endostatin and angiostatin combination.

The Mesothelioma Research Foundation of America is funding research on mesothelioma cure. The USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center in Los Angeles has completed Phase I Clinical Trials on a new mesothelioma treatment drug called Veglin.

Phase II Clinical trials of Veglin have begun in July 2004, opening exciting treatment possibilities for mesothelioma victims.

Mesothelioma Mesothelioma Treatments – Some Basic Facts

Mesothelioma Treatments – Some Basic Facts

Article by Kirsten Hawkins

Before we discuss about mesothelioma treatments it is important to have an understanding of what is mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a rare cancer of the linings of lungs and abdominal area caused by exposure to asbestos fibers. It takes 30-40 years for this cancer to appear after the asbestos exposure. It is important to treat this cancer in the early stages otherwise it proves fatal. Various mesothelioma treatments are surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

There are two types of surgeries for mesothelioma treatments, Aggressive Surgery and Palliative Procedures. Before performing any surgery, it is necessary to check whether the heart and lungs are functioning properly. Of the two types, aggressive surgery, also known as Pneumonectomy, is complicated surgery performed on younger patients, who are good in health and can bear the surgery. Pneumonectomy involves the removal of extra pleural membrane. The main purpose of this mesothelioma treatment is to physically remove as much tumor as possible.

Palliative procedures of mesothelioma treatment are known as Pleurectomy. It is done in the early stages of cancer. This process of mesothelioma treatment involves surgical removal of pleura. However, the procedures are involved to lessen and control the symptoms rather than to cure the disease. This surgery reduces the pain caused by the tumor mass and helps in preventing the recurrence of pleural effusion. Complete removal of tumor is not possible with this procedure.

Chemotherapy is a mesothelioma treatment method that makes combined use of certain drugs for shrinking the tumor. Though some patients show only partial success to this method, some combinations of chemotherapy drugs have proved successful. Scientists have developed some new chemotherapy drugs for mesothelioma treatments.

Radiation therapy is the mesothelioma treatment method that makes use of nuclear radiations to kill the malignant cells and shrink the tumor. However, radiation therapy is an extremely difficult procedure. It can damage the healthy cells of heart, lungs, and other vital organs surrounded by radiation dosage. Dual therapy includes chemotherapy and radiation therapy along with the combination of surgery. This combination helps in killing any remaining tumor cells left after surgery and in relieving symptoms such as pain.

Mesothelioma treatments can be very expensive. However the patients suffering from mesothelioma and other asbestos based diseases can file lawsuits for recovering damages medical expenses, loss of income, lost earning capacity, pain and sufferings. The mesothelioma victims can take help of expert asbestos attorneys to locate the defendants- persons/companies responsible for causing asbestos exposure.

Mesothelioma Study Tests Dose and Toxicity Levels of Treatments For Mesothelioma Victims

Study Tests Dose and Toxicity Levels of Treatments For Mesothelioma Victims

Article by Peter Kent

A study currently being conducted in Boston, Mass., by several physicians is attempting to determine the highest level of medicinal treatments, such as chemotherapy, that can be administered to mesothelioma victims in order to more adequately treat symptoms of the killer lung disease.

Researchers are using two methods of treatment known as intraoperative intracavitary hyperthermic cisplatin perfusion along with amifostine, to assist in preventing cisplatin toxicity, to patients suffering from malignant pleural mesothelioma, which is often deemed the most severe and fatal diagnosis among mesothelioma patients.

So far the study has found that the use of single dose amifostine does “not protect adequately against cisplatin-induced renal toxicity,” meaning that if higher doses of the chemotherapy treatment cisplatin are used, then “additional cytoprotective strategies are needed” to protect a patient from developing toxic levels of medication in addition to their painful mesothelioma side effects.

What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma lung cancer is a fatal condition that can develop after exposure to asbestos fibers and asbestos dust occurs. It is common for individuals who are employed in the field of construction to be at the highest risk for developing mesothelioma cancer, which often remains dormant for years, eating away at a victims interior until it is too late for successful treatment.

Although those working in the construction industry are at an increasing risk of developing mesothelioma cancer, the risk also stems to their family and friends who become exposed to asbestos after an employee covered in asbestos returns home accidentally exposing family and friends to the fiber.

For those who may be concerned about a mesothelioma diagnosis, they can learn more about the condition by contacting a physician and receiving a physical as well as x-rays to ensure that a proper diagnosis as well as treatment is administered. However, it will still be important for a patient to know and recognize the following mesothelioma signs and symptoms as well. Currently, there are two main types of mesothelioma commonly affecting the lining of the lungs and the internal organs: abdominal and lung. The Mayo Clinic reported the following

* symptoms for both conditions:

* shortness of breath

* painful breathing

* painful coughing

* chest pain under the rib cage

* unusual lumps of tissue under the skin on the chest

* unexplained weight loss

* dry cough

* abdominal pain

* abdominal swelling

* change in bowel habits

* lumps of tissue in the abdomen

If an individual develops any of the above side effects, it is imperative that they receive immediate attention from a doctor. Unfortunately, there is a high rate of death linked to a mesothelioma diagnosis, which is commonly due to the fact the disease remains dormant for several years.

Support For Mesothelioma Victims

Mesothelioma sufferers face many challenges as a part of their diagnosis. In order for a victim to receive adequate mesothelioma treatments they must retrieve medical attention, which will assist in easing the pain and symptoms of mesothelioma.

Additionally, it may be necessary to receive details about the development of a mesothelioma lawsuit from an experienced mesothelioma attorney. Constructing a mesothelioma lawsuit will likely assist a victim in receiving monetary compensation, which can pay for the expensive mesothelioma treatments associated with the disease. For the latest on a mesothelioma diagnosis as well as the development of potential litigation, individuals can discuss a mesothelioma lawsuit with a mesothelioma attorney who can provide the most up-to-date news and information on such a case.

Mesothelioma Pleural Mesothelioma – Diagnosis, Causes, And Treatments of Pleural Mesothelioma

Pleural Mesothelioma – Diagnosis, Causes, And Treatments of Pleural Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer almost exclusively caused by asbestos exposure. Pleural mesothelioma is the most common type of mesothelioma, a rare cancer that develops in the mesothelial cells that make up the mesothelium, a membrane that lines many of the body’s organs and cavities.

In the case of pleural mesothelioma, the cancer develops in the lining of the lungs, called the pleura or pleural membrane. Pleural mesothelioma accounts for most cases of mesothelioma, about two thirds of all diagnosed cases. Pleural mesothelioma typically develops in one layer, but can metastasize, or spread, to the other layer. As with other types of mesothelioma, pleural mesothelioma is difficult to diagnose since symptoms do not typically arise for some time after initial asbestos exposure occurs.

Like all mesothelioma cancers, pleural mesothelioma is caused by asbestos exposure and develops when the toxic asbestos fibers become trapped in the spaces between the mesothelial cells. Once trapped in the body, asbestos fibers cause cancerous cells to divide abnormally, resulting in the thickening of the pleural membrane layers and mesothelial cells, causing build-up of fluid (called pleural effusion).

In cases of pleural mesothelioma, asbestos exposure occurs via inhalation of asbestos fibers. Also, pleural mesothelioma is sometimes referred to as an asbestos lung cancer. These asbestos fibers become imbedded in the lining of the lung (the pleura). Over time, they cause chronic inflammation that eventually leads to growth of cancerous tumors or, in some cases, asbestosis.

Pleural mesothelioma patients who are not diagnosed early enough for curative treatment have fewer treatment options, mostly limited to palliative treatments, designed to relieve pain and discomfort to improve a patient’s quality of life, rather than their prognosis. Pleural mesothelioma cancer represents about 75 percent of all mesothelioma cases. Pleural mesothelioma patients display all three types of mesothelioma cancer cells: epithelioid mesothelioma, sarcomatoid mesothelioma and biphasic mesothelioma.

Pleural plaques are localized scars (fibrosis) consisting of collagen fiber deposits that form as a result of exposure to asbestos. Pleural plaques first appear around 20 years after a person is exposed to asbestos. Pleural plaques can form even with low-dose, intermittent exposure. Pleural mesothelioma’s symptoms are not specific, and may indicate other, less serious, conditions.

Since pleural mesothelioma is the most common form of the cancer, more research and knowledge about this type of mesothelioma is present to utilize when detailing a treatment plan. Understanding available treatment options is often very important to patients and their loved ones. Typically, patients will receive a combination of two or more of these types of treatment. Early detection of pleural mesothelioma can improve a patient’s mesothelioma prognosis considerably, and these patients have more extensive treatment options.

Patients diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma in stage one or two generally have greater treatment options and a better prognosis. Palliative treatments include removal of built-up fluid from the pleural spaces, and surgical removal of tumors to relieve pressure on the lungs. Radiation & chemotherapy are common mesothelioma treatment options. A variety of new and novel mesothelioma treatments are available, as are a variety of clinical trials. While prognosis for pleural mesothelioma patients typically ranges between four and 18 months, there are several traditional and alternative treatment methods that may prolong a patient’s life expectancy.

The survival rate was also affected by the type of mesothelioma cancer cells; patients with biphasic cell types have the shortest life expectancy. However, pleural plaques are almost always present in patients with asbestosis and are often present in patients with mesothelioma. The current five-year survival rate for mesothelioma patients is about 10 percent.

Once mesothelioma is diagnosed, it’s important for patients to maintain good eating habits in order to better combat the disease. Many patients die within six months of diagnosis, some last up to a year, but few survive much beyond that length of time. While there is no cure for mesothelioma in any of its classifications, nearly all patients will receive some sort of mesothelioma treatment to extend life expectancy and lessen discomfort.

New Treatments

New Treatments www.mesorc.com/mesothelioma/new-treatments/ Although surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy have improved overall mesothelioma survival rates, there is still no cure for this deadly disease. Today, new mesothelioma treatment methods are being developed and studied in clinical trials. Below are a few of these newer treatments for mesothelioma. Intracavitary Chemotherapy Intracavitary chemotherapy is a new approach to mesothelioma chemotherapy in which medication is placed directly into body cavities. With this new treatment for mesothelioma, medication can be administered at much higher doses than traditional alternate chemotherapy. Intracavitary chemotherapy is also thought to allow chemotherapy medication to enter tumor cells directly, without the toxic side effects of traditional chemotherapy. Drugs Since chemotherapy agents have not proven to be very effective in treating advanced mesothelioma, doctors are currently testing new drugs. These new mesothelioma treatments include medications which kill cancers by depriving them of blood supply, such as bevacizumab (Avastin). Anti-growth factor drugs such as erlotinib (Tarceva) are also being studied. These inhibit the growth of mesothelioma cancer cells. Another promising new mesothelioma treatment, Alimta(R), was approved by the FDA in 2004. When used in combination with the anti-cancer drug cisplatin, it has been shown to drastically improve symptoms for some mesothelioma patients. Clinical trials

Treating Mesothelioma Alternative Treatments – Aromatherapy

In the search for alternative treatments to help comfort cancer patients, aromatherapy has been used to provide palliative care in conjunction with traditional treatments. Scientific evidence shows that while the effects are almost completely psychological, they have a positive effect on patients’ emotional and mental states, which can have a tremendous effect on physical discomfort.

What Treatments are Available for Victims of Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is touted as deadly because most of the cases are in advanced stage when diagnosed and doctors have little solace to offer by then. Mesothelioma is promoted as deadly because most cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage, when doctors have little to offer solace by then. Still doctors try to do their best to relieve the patients from severe pain of mesothelioma using advanced treatments. Surgery

Before considering surgery as one of the propositions for the treatment of malignant cancer, the health of the patient needs to be carefully evaluated. Mesothelioma Cancer Researchers Eye Biomarkers for Treatments

Copyright (c) 2008 Katie Kelley

A study from the Department of Molecular Pathology at the Polytechnic University of Marche in Acona, Italy recently found that biomarkers within the body may offer early warning signs for mesothelioma victims.

The study focused on biomarkers of mesothelioma cancer and found that biomarkers often form before mesothelioma cancer symptoms appear, which may offer early warnings and potentially a successful treatment for mesothelioma cancer patients, according to the study which was published in a June issue of Mutation Research.

Studying Biomarkers to Help Mesothelioma Treatment

Biomarkers are a type of “biochemically expressed substance” similar to a protein, according to a news report on the study. An effort is being collaborated on by the International Cancer Biomarker Consortium (ICBC) to better address biomarkers as indicators of cancer types such as mesothelioma.

The large-scale effort is similar, according to the ICBC, to the Human Genome Project and uses an array of researchers from around the world to assist in studying the use of the the biomarkers. The Polytechnic study followed 119 individuals who had been previously exposed to asbestos; of these individuals, all exhibited increased numbers of biomarkers compared to individuals who were not exposed to asbestos.

What is Mesothelioma Cancer

Mesothelioma is a type of lung cancer that can develop after an individual is exposed to asbestos fibers or asbestos dust. After an individual is exposed to asbestos fibers, they may begin to develop cancerous cells on the interior lining of the lung. The cancer is often described as one of the only preventable forms of cancer especially since individuals are still being exposed to asbestos in America through improper cleanup and disposal methods. Asbestos can be found presently in an array of buildings including apartment complexes, homes, elementary schools, universities, hospitals and offices.

Unfortunately, individuals continue to be exposed to asbestos fibers because of its existence in many products implemented throughout the country, and because it is too costly to remove all asbestos by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), many remain at risk. Additionally, because mesothelioma cancer usually remains dormant for years, it becomes increasingly difficult to diagnose and to successfully treat.

Finding Help for Asbestos Related Conditions Like Mesothelioma

It is important that individuals who may have been exposed to asbestos to contact a medical professional immediately to assess and potentially diagnose their condition. If mesothelioma cancer is diagnosed early on a mesothelioma victim has a better chance of decreasing the risks of fatality commonly associated with the cancer.

In addition to contacting a medical professional it may also be important to contact an experienced mesothelioma attorney to learn about developing a mesothelioma lawsuit, which may result in receiving monetary compensation to pay for expensive mesothelioma medical bills.
