Mesothelioma – The Working Man’s Killer

What is mesothelioma? Mesothelioma, more precisely malignant mesothelioma, is a rare form of cancer that develops from the protective lining that covers many of the body’s internal organs, themesothelium. It is usually caused by exposure to asbestos.

Back in the day, asbestos was used in the construction of many buildings and places of business. Unknowing workers worked in these structures each day not know that there was danger lurking in thewalls and ceiling. Many years later, some were diagnosed with a type of lung cancer that was directly attributed to the asbestos exposure. Luckily today, asbestos is no longer used as a building material dueto the risk.

Those suffering from the effects of long term asbestos exposure are often diagnosed with a cancer called mesothelioma. There are different types of this cancer but the most common is Pleural Mesothelioma which affects the lining or pleura of the lungs. Symptoms include difficulty swallowing, a persistent dry cough, chest pain or painful breathing.

The second type of Mesothelioma that is most common is Peritoneal Mesothelioma. This affects the lining of the abdominal cavity. Typical symptoms of this type of cancer are vomiting, a distendedabdomen, a change in bowel habits, and unexplained weight loss.

Mesothelioma is a particularly aggressive type of cancer and does not usually respond well to standard cancer treatments. In addition to being difficult to treat, it is usually not easily diagnosed. Pleuralmesothelioma responds better than other types, but that is only if it is caught in the early stages. Due to the difficulty in getting a timely diagnosis, the prognosis is not usually a good one.

This difficulty in diagnosis makes it critical that you inform your doctor of any known exposure to asbestos. Without this information, your doctor may not consider asbestos related diseases as a potential cause for your symptoms, hence delaying a proper diagnosis. Any symptom, no matter how insignificant it might seem, needs to be reported to your doctor. Armed with this information, he can then order appropriate tests to accurately diagnose any asbestos caused illness.

Each year approximately 2000-3000 people are diagnosed with asbestos related cancer. This number is projected to go higher over the next decade. Researchers and scientists continue to study Mesotheliomaand its possible causes. Hopefully, with advancements in treatment options, Mesothelioma patients will have better a better prognosis in the long term.

What Radical Mesothelioma Treatments Are Available?

Current radical mesothelioma treatments include chemotherapy treatments, radiation treatments, surgical treatments and experimental therapies and drugs. Research news reports the limited success of present treatments for Mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma research news indicates that traditional treatments viz. single or multi-drug chemotherapy has a response rate of about 20%. Radiation treatments, usually used in conjunction with surgery or chemotherapy treatments can relieve pain and shrink tumors, making breathing easier. However, radiation treatments can also cause severe side effects.

Efforts To Combat Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma can take between ten and sixty years to develop after inhalation of respirable asbestos fibers, but Mesothelioma progresses fast. Radical surgeries as mesothelioma treatments have had limited success. Surgical treatments attempted include extra-pleural pneumonectomy (EPP) and pleurectomy.

Treatment news indicates that in EPP over 15% patients die soon after surgery. EPP involves removal of pleura, diaphragm, pericardium, part of the phrenic nerve and the entire tumor-affected lung and has to be supported by chemotherapy or radiation.

The pleurectomy treatments involve removal of the pleura without removing the whole lung. These treatments are best in patients with good lung expansion who tend to accumulate fluid. In combination with radiation pleurectomy is reported in treatment news to have given 22-month survival in 50% and 24-month survival in 41% cases in a 27-patient group with mesothelioma of the epithelial subtype.

Surgical treatments of mesothelioma have not been shown to offer significant advantages over the limited non-surgical treatments. Experimental drugs under evaluation include treatments by Onconase, Lovastatin and an Endostatin and angiostatin combination.

The Mesothelioma Research Foundation of America is funding research on mesothelioma cure. The USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center in Los Angeles has completed Phase I Clinical Trials on a new mesothelioma treatment drug called Veglin.

Phase II Clinical trials of Veglin have begun in July 2004, opening exciting treatment possibilities for mesothelioma victims.

Surgery is an important step in confirming and knowing the nature of the cancer. It can be conducted on patients with the combination of adjuvant chemotherapies and radiations, before and after the surgery.

Pleurectomy:The most common surgery for Mesothelioma treatment is pleurectomy, in which doctors open the patient’s chest and remove the excessive fluid or tumor from the lining of the lungs (pleura). Although this procedure controls the accumulation of fluid and decreases pain, it still is not a cure. On the other hand, if the tumor is in its initial form and has not extensively grown, a pleurectomy can increase the survival rate of a patient when combined with chemotherapy and radiation. Additionally, a pleurectomy can be performed on patients with less-approving health conditions and has lower mortality rate than the extrapleural pneumonectomy.

Extrapleural Pneumonectomy (EPP):Extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP) is an invasive and severe form of surgery conducted on patients with Mesothelioma. In this treatment, parts of the lungs, the pleura (the lining of the lung), the pericardium (lining of the heart) and the hemi-diaphragm, along with the tumor cells, are removed. It decreases the progression of Mesothelioma, while allowing a patient to breathe smoothly. It is usually conducted on patients with early stages of the cancer and when the tumor is in chest cavity. EPP is recommended for patients with good heart and lungs conditions, in order to endure the severities of the post-operative term. Though the surgery combined with chemotherapy and radiation gives promising results, it does not guarantee a cure. Researches have shown that patients treated with extrapleural pneumonectomy and therapies have a medium life span of 35 months after the surgery, compared to only 9 months of pleurectomy. Still, some doctors question the surgery for its high risks, which include internal bleeding, blood clotting, pneumonia, amassing of pus, respiratory failure and even death. Thus, many surgeons recommend the idea of pleurectomy instead of the technically complicated EPP.

Thoracentesis:A minor surgery is often conducted on patients who cannot undergo EPP or pleurectomy, called thoracentesis. In thoracentesis, a thoracic surgeon inserts a needle into a patient’s chest to remove the excessive fluid built up in the lining of the lungs (pleura). This method neither cures nor decreases the cancer, but rather alleviate the painful symptoms of Mesothelioma. In some cases, talc or other agents are infused into a patient’s chests to scar the chest wall and help them breathe properly without letting the tumor to increase, to some extent.

Paracentesis:Paracentesis is a similar method of using a needle to extract fluid, but from the abdominal section of the body. It follows the same procedure of extracting fluid from the lining of the stomach or other abdominal organs. Patients with peritoneal Mesothelioma can benefit from paracentesis surgery.

Mesothelioma is a relatively rare cancer that affects the lining around the heart, lungs and abdominal cavities which is called the mesothelium.

Mesothelioma is primarily caused by chronic exposure to asbestos or asbestos-related products.

When asbestos fibers enter the body, by either breathing in the tiny asbestos fibers or by swallowing them, they can cause healthy cells to mutate into cancer. There is currently no known cure for malignant mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma causes the cells of the mesothelium to mutate and multiply infinitely. It is this mutation which causes tumors that prevent proper lung and heart functions. Studies have shown that mesothelioma can also invade part of the immune system, including the spleen, bone marrow and lymph nodes.
