After the Diagnosis: Mesothelioma AdviceMesothelioma Advice in the Community

After a patient is moved into the nursing home, one common ailment is mesothelioma. Mesothelioma advice should be sought from the nursing home and the attending physician. Mesothelioma is common in the elderly because of asbestos, an environmental cause. Working in factories with asbestos or in construction causes asbestos exposure. Over time the patient inhales the particles and it can cause mesothelioma. When a patient has dementia or is just elderly, mesothelioma can aggravate the condition and destroy the quality of life. It takes over 20 years to truly get mesothelioma, so often it is not known one has mesothelioma until it is too late.

When seeking mesothelioma advice, one must make sure it is from health care professionals or credible resources in the community. There are three types of mesothelioma. Pleural mesotheliom, affecting the lungs. Peritoneal mesothelioma affects the abdomen. Pericardial mesothelioma affects the muscles around the heart.

Mesothelioma severely affects the quality of life for an elderly resident. Even without dementia or other psychiatric conditions, the resident will have a difficult time. Pleural mesothelioma affects 70% of people with the condition. The symptoms are night sweats, a general feeling of not being well, shortness of breath and chest pain. In peritoneal mesothelioma, the symptoms are swelling of the abdomen or a mass. This can make eating and holding down food difficult. Bowel obstructions and blood clotting are also common. Pericardial mesothelioma is the rarest form of the 3, but with the worst prognosis.

Pericardial mesothelioma occurs when the fibers of asbestos get into the bloodstream and settle into the heart muscles. Often, it is misdiagnosed for a simple heart condition, because they have the same symptoms: respiratory issues, murmurs and chest pain. Treatment for this type of mesothelioma is surgery and radiation, but sensitive organs, like the heart get exposed to the radiation, making the treatment difficult. The tumors can create fluid in the tissues, so often these are just drained to improve the patient’s quality of life.

Patients working in coal mines and in insulation are exposed to asbestos causing this disease. This is why so many of the elderly have it because it takes 20 years to develop, and we did not know the risk they were taking until it was too late. Legal counsel should be sought when one wants mesothelioma advice to be sure of the legal rights they have. Researching mesothelioma information is beneficial as well.
